Principle and practice are the same in principle, but not in practice.

Creating and digging up new functions of materials, just as we want, have been a dream of humankind. Nanotechnology now can open such a possibility by controlling their structure and dimension in atomic and molecular scale. The principle of this ultimate technology is based on deeper knowledge of quantum mechanical or quantum chemical behavior of electrons inside materials. The nanotechnology therefore makes it possible to explore over the horizons of materials research and development, and offers actual possibility for future devices, such as single molecule devices and biological devices using DNA as well as ultramicro and ultrahigh efficiency devices. In order to realize these, we need skills as well as advanced knowledge of physics, physical chemistry, device engineering and integrated experience over these fields. From such backgrounds, Department of Nanoscience has been established.

The academic members of the department have various research backgrounds, such as on electronic and optical properties of solids in nanoscale, and electronic properties of surface and interface of materials in atomic and molecular scale. Therefore, the academic fields can be easily expanded to modern electronics, energy and biology fields that need nanoscience. For education, cooperation with the department of electrical and electronic engineering and faculty of science (physics and chemistry) is scheduled.

We want to help young challengers to fly higher in the nano-world.

The students can experience the close communication with the teaching staffs and the highest-level research program in the small group instruction. A new admission system emphasizing inquiring mind and tenacity of the test-takers is planed in 2009.

The curriculum is designed to help the students learn smoothly from the fundamental subjects to the specialized subjects.

After graduation, the way is opened to the graduate school, Graduate School of Advanced Integration Science, to improve your ability.

Promising place of employment is nano-tech related companies such as electronics manufacturers, telecommunication and information industry, precision instrument industry, chemical industry and biology-related field etc..
